Benzene Exposure and Blood Cancers

Asbestos can be dangerous and deadly, leaving workers who are exposed to it to die from terrible health conditions such as mesothelioma.  Almost everyone knows about asbestos and its dangers by now.  There are many more toxic chemicals out there that can cause a worker to suffer tragic medical side effects.  One of these chemicals is benzene, used very commonly in the production of goods, in homes and in offices.  This chemical can cause those who have been exposed to develop a number of side effects in the short and long term, and even lead to death.

What is it?

As a liquid, benzene has no color, does not dissolve in water, appears clear, and gives off a sweet smell.  It does not evaporate easily and is heavier than air, if it is a gas.

Where is it?

Benzene can be found occurring naturally, and as a result of certain human activities such as production processes.  It is one of the 20 most common chemicals used in America.  It is used as part of the manufacturing process for materials such as rubber, plastics, lubricants, dyes, medicines, detergents, and pesticides.

What happens if I have been exposed to benzene?

You suffer from the following symptoms during or immediately after exposure:

– Dizziness

– Drowsiness

– Headaches

– Tremors or seizures

– Unconsciousness

– Confusion

– Rapid heart rate

– Vomiting

The effects of long-term benzene exposure are more serious and lasting.  Exposure to benzene can cause cancer and other serious health complications such as:

–       Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)

–       Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)

–       Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL)

–       Acute Myeloid leukemia (AML)

–       Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL)

If you suspect that you have been exposed to benzene, it is important to tell your doctor about your concerns to show medical documentation of your worries.  If you or someone you love has a blood cancer related to exposure to benzene, contact our Benzene Attorneys today at benzene@smslegal.com.
